Morganton, NC – Perfect playing conditions produced low scores across the board on the opening day of play at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Monday.

For the Stetson Hatters, the opening day produced scores of 294 and 288, but with other teams posting rounds in the in the low 280s, 270s and even a 269, the Hatters stand in 11th place in the 13 team tournament.

Wofford College (540) posted rounds of nine-under par 271 and 11-under par 269 to build a 10 shot lead over Davidson. The Wildcats (550) have an 18-shot lead over the next closest teams in the field.

Elon College and Presbyterian (568) are tied for third place with host Appalachian State (569), one shot back. High Point (570) and James Madison (571) are also within striking distance of a top five finish.

With so many low team scores, there were also plenty of players who finished the first day of play under par. A trio – Davidson’s Todd Eckstein, Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Fricker and Wofford’s George Perkovich – share the lead. All three posted seven-under par scores of 133 on the opening day.

Stetson sophomore Dustin Dingus and freshman Zach Stark had the best first day for the Hatters. Both finished at one-over par 141 and are tied for 17th.

Dingus opened the day with a one-under par 69 and then played the second round at two-over 72. Stark followed an opening round 73 with a two-under par 68.

Behind that duo, sophomore David Torres posted rounds of 77-72=149 and is tied for 56th. Freshman Dirk Kuehler (75-76=151) is tied for 64th and senior Tyler White (77-76=153) is tied for 74th.

The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with a final 18 holes.  Love scoring for the tournament is available at
