Coming back from a two-game-to-one deficit, the Hatternauts took the decisive game five to win the 2013 Hatter Series with a 6-3 victory over the Dunn Deals, Friday at Melching Field.

The Nauts put on an offensive display with six runs on 12 hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out only three times in the seven innings. They got three of their six runs in the top of the first inning off Dunn Deals' starter Josh Powers.  With one out, Tyler Bocock reached base on a fielding error and Patrick Mazeika followed with a sharp line drive single to right, putting runners on first and second.  Hatternaut MVP Taylor Cockrell stepped to the plate and promptly sent a ground rule double down the right field line scoring Bocock. After Kurt Schluter struck out, Robert Bruce came up with a two-out single to center field, scoring both Mazeika and Cockrell.
The Dunn Deals answered in the bottom of the first when Naut starting pitcher Adam Schaly struggled finding the strike zone. Schaly walked lead-off hitter K'shawn Smith and Darby McCormick, sandwiched around a Kyle Zech fly out to center.  Smith, after stealing second and reaching third on an errant pick-off attempt, was balked home when Schaly dropped the ball while standing on the rubber. McCormick moved up to second on the balk, advanced to third on a Garrett Russini infield single and later scored on sacrifice fly to center by Kyle Pitts, making it a 3-2 game.
Both the Nauts and Deals put up single runs in the second making the score 4-3, but that is all the scoring that the Nauts would allow the rest of the way. Cockrell doubled again leading off the fifth and eventually scored on another RBI single by Bruce, giving the Hatternauts a 5-3 edge.

Second baseman Kevin Fagan lead off the sixth with a single, moved to second on a bunt single by Bocock and, after a double steal, scored on a Mazeika infield single, making it a 6-3 ballgame.
On the day, the Nauts were paced by Fagan (2-4, 1r), Bocock (3-4, 1r), Mazeika (2-4, 1r, 1rbi), Cockrell (2-4, 2r, 1rbi, 2 2b) and Bruce (2-3, 3 rbi).
Frankie Romano got the win in relief, his second in the Hatter Series, while Powers took the loss.
The Hatter Series wraps up Fall team practice for the Hatters. Stetson opens the 2014 season with a three-game home series against Ole Miss, Feb. 14-16 at Melching Field.
