DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Stetson women's tennis team defeated cross-county foe Embry-Riddle 6-3 in non-conference action Sunday afternoon for the Hatters' third straight victory.
"The team played an excellent match today against a strong Embry-Riddle squad," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "Our intensity was on point from the first ball and our doubles set the tone again today."
Playing NAIA rules where all three doubles matches count for one point, two out of three Stetson doubles pairs came away with victories on Sunday.
Senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Carolina Meregalli won 8-3 at number two doubles, while senior Lindsey Cable and sophomore Eveline Lepinay won 8-2 at the number three position to give the Hatters an early 2-1 lead.
Stetson went on to win the first three singles matches to clinch the victory with a 5-1 advantage. Bukajeva extended her singles winning streak to nine matches with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one singles.
Meregalli won 6-3, 6-0 at number five singles, and then sophomore Cari Berry won 6-0, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Hatters. Sophomore Andrea Crespo also won 6-1, 6-3 at number two, while the Eagles took number three and number six to make the final score 6-3 in favor of Stetson.
"We have a short time to prepare for another challenging team in Florida Atlantic," Pilote said. "We need to continue to improve in practices this week to continue our progression."
The Hatters will continue their two-game road trip on Friday, playing at Florida Atlantic at 1:00 p.m. in Boca Raton.
