BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Stetson women’s tennis team earned a 4-3 win over Florida Atlantic on Friday afternoon to pick up the Hatters' fourth straight victory of the season.
“I am very proud of our team today,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. “We pulled out a good win in an extremely hostile environment. To be able to beat a very good FAU team under the conditions is a very positive result.”
Stetson opened by winning the first two doubles matches to earn the first point. Senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Isabella Fernandez won 8-6 at number one doubles, before sophomore Andrea Crespo and senior MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell also picked up an 8-6 victory to give the Hatters the point.
“We started slowly in doubles, down 5-1 on both number one and number three,” Pilote said. “But we played very well from the mid-points of the sets.”
FAU tied the match at 1-1 when Catalina Ene topped Stauffer-MacDowell 6-0, 6-2 at number four singles. Stetson countered with a pair of wins to make it 3-1, needing only one more point to secure the victory.
Freshman Carolina Meregalli won 6-2, 6-0 against Taylor Briggs at number six and sophomore Cari Berry topped Claire Andrews 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at the number five position to give Stetson the healthy lead.
The Owls stormed back, winning at number three and number one in straight sets to tie the match at three points apiece.
After winning set one 7-6 (7-2), Crespo earned a 7-5 win in her second set to clinch the victory for the Hatters at number two singles.
Stetson extended its win streak to four matches with the triumph. The Hatters will continue regular season action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they host Eastern Michigan at 2:30 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
