Stetson University 6-3 center Amber Porter was named the Mid-Major Freshman of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com on Thursday. Porter had also been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and a first team all-conference selection earlier this week.
One of the top shot blockers in the nation, Porter enters this weekend's Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinals with 118 blocks on the season, the fourth highest total in the NCAA. That mark also ranks as the second-highest single-season total in A-Sun history and the sixth-highest total for a freshman in NCAA history.
A native of Woodbridge, Va., Porter has also proven to be a threat with the basketball, connecting on a conference-best 55% of her field goal opportunities. She also ranks sixth in the league in scoring (14.2 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (8.2 rpg).
This season, Porter was named the A-Sun Newcomer of the Week a record five times, and also claimed the league's Player of the Week honor once. She has scored 440 points, more than any other freshman in school history.
The Hatters (25-6) will take on USC Upstate (17-13) in the A-Sun semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The game will be played at Florida Gulf Coast and carried live on ESPN3 and WSBB radio.
