DELAND, Fla. – The Stetson University sand volleyball team began Atlantic Sun Conference play in perfect fashion Friday, defeating Jacksonville 3-2 and then sweeping Florida Gulf Coast 5-0. The wins extended the Hatters’ win streak to eight to begin the season and made them 2-0 in the conference.
SU and JU began play on Friday, with the Dolphins taking both matches at the No. 1 and 2 seed slots, but Stetson stormed back winning three straight to capture the victory. The pairing of Savannah Byl and Catherine Coston at the three seed defeated Jacksonville’s Rachel Miller and Emily Laskelle, 21-10, 21-6, followed wins at No. 4 (Maren Rygh/Jordann Dierickx) and No. 5 (Tiffany Creamer/Kristin Lind).
Byl and Coston who were named the A-Sun’s pair of the week, moved up from No. 3 to the second slot for the FGCU match, where they would again show their brilliance, defeating the Eagles’ Karina Mambuca and Caroline Jordan 21-13, 21-17. Like their team as a whole, the pair has not lost a match yet this season.
Other wins for Stetson in the sweep of Florida Gulf Coast included No. 1 seed Kaley Melville and Kaylee Anderson (21-19, 15-21, 15-13) as well as third seeded Rachael Farrell and Julie Bassett (21-11, 21-15).
Stetson (8-0) will take on the same two squads Saturday, Mar. 22 at the Sand Volleyball Courts. The first match between SU and FGCU gets underway at 11 a.m. and then the Hatters and Dolphins will start their rematch at 1 p.m.
