The Stetson lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at the Athletic Training Center, but the Hatters ultimately lost to the Pioneers 13-10.

Stetson (0-8) was ready to go from the start, scoring in the first 41 seconds to take an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Danielle Horgan scored an unassisted goal to put the Hatters in front. Sacred Heart (1-3) countered with a pair of scores to earn a 2-1 advantage with 27:12 on the clock.

The Hatters regained the lead at 3-2 with 17:39 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Paige Levesque tallied a free position score before Horgan put another unassisted goal in the back of the net to lead Stetson back.

The Pioneers hit back with a goal just nine seconds later, and scored two more in the next five minutes to take a two goal advantage, at 5-3.

Sophomore Mary Kate O’Sullivan and freshman Christina Loya beat Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kelly Keenan seven minutes apart to tie the game up again, this time at 5-5 with 3:53 to play in the first frame. SHU’s Jesslyn Joseph finished off the period with one of her three scores on the day to give the Pioneers a 6-5 advantage at the break.

Sacred Heart came out of the break and scored three out of the first four goals to take a 9-6 lead just over six minutes into the period. Stetson sophomore Noelle Morabito broke up the Pioneers’ three goals with a score off of an assist from Levesque.

Stetson got as close as one goal after that, making it 10-9 after a pair of scores from freshman Ana Baranowki and one by freshman Lindsay Summers.

SHU ended the game on a 3-1 run, broken up only by an unassisted score by Stetson’s Samantha Maguire. The Pioneers held onto the ball over the final couple of minutes to secure the 13-10 victory.

Horgan and Baranowski led the way with two goals each, while Loya and Levesque added one goal and one assist each. Sacred Heart’s Shelby Vaccaro and Joseph led the Pioneers with three scores apiece.

Stetson sophomore Caili Guilday kept the Hatters in the game with 13 saves in goal. She added four ground balls, which tied with sophomore Rachel Dumas for the team high. Baranowski and O’Sullivan led Stetson with four draw controls each, while Dumas caused a game high four turnovers.

The Hatters will continue non-conference action on Tuesday. Stetson hosts Saint Joseph’s at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
