It wasn’t as easy as the last three wins, but the Stetson women’s tennis team prevailed again on Saturday, defeating UNCG 4-3 for the Hatters’ eighth straight win of the season.

“What a great college tennis match for both teams today,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. “UNC Greensboro is a top program, and with four returners on this year’s team, they are a strong squad again. Coach Trivette runs a first class program. There are no easy singles or doubles wins when you play one of his teams.”

Stetson opened things up by winning two out of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Isabella Fernandez won 8-4 at number one doubles, while senior Lindsey Cable and sophomore Eveline Lepinay won 8-2 at number three to secure the point for the Hatters.

“The doubles were excellent again today," Pilote said. "It is rewarding to see the constant improvement of our doubles teams with each match this season.”

Bukajeva gave Stetson a 2-0 lead, making quick work of Soumeya Anane at number one singles. She won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. UNCG made it 2-1 with a win at the number three position.

Stetson extended its lead to 3-1 when sophomore Cari Berry won 6-1, 6-4 at number five. When the Spartans won at the number four position, the Hatters needed a win at number two or six to take the match.

Both came down to three-set results. UNCG won at number two, but Stetson freshman Carolina Meregalli won 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 at number six to give the Hatters the 4-3 victory.

The Spartans, who were ranked as high as 65th in the nation last season, fall to 3-5 on the year with the loss. Stetson improves to 8-1, having won eight straight matches since opening the season with a loss at Florida State.

Stetson will continue home competition on Tuesday, March 11. The Hatters host Illinois State at 2:30 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
