Morganton, NC – The Stetson University men’s golf team settled for a 10th place finish on Tuesday in the Donald Ross Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Appalachian State.
The Hatters made the turn in the final round of the tournament at Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club at one under par for the final round, as a team. Stetson however gave six shots back after the turn to finish three shots behind Volusia County foe Bethune-Cookman.
Overall, Stetson finished with a score of 28 over par 868 for the tournament, which included 13 teams plus individual players from Wake Forest.
Wofford finished a wire-to-wire victory in the tournament, although the Terriers had to hold off Davidson, which made up eight shots in the final round to finish within two shots of first. Wofford’s 16-under par total of 824 included rounds of 271, 269 and 284.
Davidson was the only other team to finish under par on a course that was set up for scoring at a distance of 6,718 yards for a par of 70. The Wildcats posted rounds of 279, 271 and 276 to finish at 14 under par.
Elon College finished third with an even par score of 840, with the host Mountaineers (849) and Presbyterian (850) rounding out the top five.
Individually, Bethune-Cookman’s Ryan Fricker and Wofford’s George Perkovich finished tied at the top of the leader board with matching eight under par scores of 202. Both players closed with one-under par rounds of 69 on Tuesday.
Stetson sophomore Dustin Dingus earned his first top 10 finish of the year by closing the tournament with a three-under par score of 67. Dingus moved into a four-way tie for ninth overall with a final score of two under par 208.
Freshman Zach Stark entered play on Tuesday tied with Dingus, but a one-over par 71 in the final round, a round that was done in by a five-over par stretch on three of the last four holes, left Stark tied for 23rd in the final standings at one over par 211 for the tournament.
Freshman Dirk Kuehler finished tied for 54th after his final round score of 72 left him at 13 over par 223 for the tournament.
The Hatters will continue with a busy three week stretch to close the fall season next weekend when they compete in the Cobra-Puma Invitational in Ft. Myers. The annual Stetson Invitational at Victoria Hills Golf Club with close the fall schedule on Nov. 4-5.
