DELAND, Fla. – Freshman midfielder Ana Baranowski scored a season high four goals as the Stetson University lacrosse team fell to Wagner 11-10, Monday night at the Athletic Training Center. The 10 goals scored by the Hatters were their second most all-season, just one shy of their season high.
Stetson jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, just eight and a half minutes into the contest with scores from Baranowski, Lindsay Summers and MaryKate O’Sullivan. That lead would not hold up for long as Wagner reeled off five goals in the next 20 minutes, sandwiched in between another Summers score, to make it 5-4 Seahawks at the half.
Another Wagner goal at the start of the second made it 6-4, but then the Hatters stormed back, with three straight Baranowski scores during a four minute stretch, giving Stetson back the lead at 7-6. Two of Baranowski’s second half scores were off free position shots, with the last coming unassisted.
Both teams then took turns trading goals for the next 10 minutes until Stetson held a 10-8 advantage, with exactly 10 minutes remaining in the contest. That’s where the scored remained until the 7:24 mark in the second, when the Seahawks scored their first of three consecutive goals to cap off the come from behind victory, 11-10.
Besides Baranowski’s four goals, three Hatters had a pair of scores Monday night, as Summers, O’Sullivan and Christina Loya each netted two. Danielle Horgan led all Stetson players with a pair of assists, while Christina Wittmeier and Loya had one apiece.
Stetson won the majority of the draw controls versus Wagner (12-10) and the two schools were even when it came to clears with a dozen apiece. The Hatters came up with 22 ground balls to the Seahawks’ 30, while firing off nine shots in both the first and second halves.
Sophomore goal keeper Caili Guilday stopped eight Wagner shots on Monday; her fourth straight game with eight or more saves, giving her 103 on the season.
The Hatters (0-10) next play Marist, Friday, Mar. 21 at 7 p.m., in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. Their next home game is slated for Wednesday, Mar. 26 vs. Florida at the ATC.
