JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s tennis team made it 10 straight trips to the Atlantic Sun Championship semifinals, with its 4-0 over No. 5 Mercer, Thursday afternoon.

The women have now played on the tournament’s second day every year, dating back to 2005 and it was fittingly A-Sun Player of the Year, Diana Bukajeva, who clinched the shutout victory.

Bukajeva won in straight sets over the Bears’ Danielle Jones, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), to give the Hatters their 17th victory this season and their second over Mercer in less than a month. Bukajeva improved her 2014 singles record to an impressive 18-4.

Stetson began the match taking the first two doubles pairings to go ahead 1-0. Bukajeva and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell won 8-4 on court No. 1, and then Eveline Lepinay and her partner Lindsey Cable were victorious on No. 3, 8-4 to put their team out in front.

Stauffer-MacDowell was the first to finish in singles play as she triumphed 7-5, 6-3 on court No. 4. Isabella Fernandez gave Stetson a commanding 3-0 advantage with her 6-4, 6-3 win on court No.3, setting the stage for Bukajeva’s clincher.

The Hatters, now 17-5 will next take on No. 1 seed and host North Florida, tomorrow on their home courts. Both teams met up in the regular season, Mar. 22 in DeLand, where the Ospreys were victorious 5-2. Stetson will look to even the season series, Friday at 12 p.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville.
