BERKELEY, Calif. – In the second of two games in the Bay Area, the Stetson lacrosse team (0-11) was defeated by California (6-4) by a score of 19-2 on Monday. The Golden Bears remained undefeated at home in 2013 with the victory.
Cal got out to a quick lead, scoring two goals within the first minute and a half of play, and racing out to a 13-0 advantage at halftime. The Bears allowed just one Stetson shot during the first 30 minutes of action, totaling 25 of their own to take the commanding halftime lead.
Stetson was able to slow Cal down a bit in the second half, and the Hatters scored their first goal of the game with 8:47 to play in the game. Freshman Maylis Broderick tied freshman Danielle Horgan for the team-lead with her ninth goal of the season to make it 16-1 in favor of the Bears.
Cal put three more scores on the board before Stetson was able to put a final shot in the back of the net with just one second remaining on the clock. Freshman Paige Levesque beat Bears goalkeeper Helen Hansen to make the final score 19-2.
Both teams were efficient in transition as Stetson finished 8-of-11 on clears, while Cal was 9-of-10. The Bears finished with 37 shots, however, and the Hatters totaled just four. Cal recorded 21 ground balls and 17 draw controls, while Stetson managed just 11 and six, respectively.
Freshmen Amanda Parker and Rachel Dumas led Stetson with three ground balls each. In goal, it was once again freshmen Caili Guilday and Whitney Meyers splitting time. The former stopped three shots in 16 minutes, while the latter made five saves in 44 minutes of action.
Stetson will next return to Florida but stay on the road. The Hatters begin Atlantic Sun Conference play at league-leading Jacksonville on Saturday, April 6. Stetson and the Dolphins are scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
