The Stetson women’s soccer team defeated St. Leo by a score of 3-2 on Monday night in its final exhibition match before the regular season. Freshman Ashni Deschenes scored two goals, while senior Alyssa Welsh recorded a pair of assists in the victory.

“I thought the first half was good. I thought our rhythm, our shape, our tempo, the speed at which we went forward – I thought it was excellent,” Head Coach Manoj Khettry said following the game.

“We were a bit sloppy defensively,” Khettry continued. “They caused us some problems, but I’m happy that we scored three goals.”

Stetson got on the board first when sophomore Mara Keomanivane played a ball through the defense to Welsh down the right side. Welsh crossed the ball into the box, it deflected off of a defender, and Deschenes was able to finish into the back of the net.

After St. Leo tied the game at 1-1 later in the first half, Welsh made another long run down the sideline, this time on the left. Again playing the ball across the box, freshman Paige Law got on the end of it to give Stetson a 2-1 advantage before halftime.

The Lions tied the game once again midway through the second half, and it wasn’t until less than 10 minutes remained that the Hatters were able to take their final lead. Keomanivane played a ball into the middle that Deschenes was able to head over the top of St. Leo’s goalkeeper to make it 3-2 in favor of Stetson.

That was the final score as Stetson improved to 2-0 in exhibition play this season. The Hatters will open regular season action on Friday. Stetson hosts Embry-Riddle at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center. Live Stats and Live Video will be available for the game.
