Hatters Fall to William & Mary on Saturday

The Stetson lacrosse team (0-4) fell to William & Mary (2-3) by a score of 21-3 on Saturday morning at the Athletic Training Center. Freshmen Danielle Horgan, Paige Levesque, and Maylis Broderick each scored for the Hatters in the defeat.

The Tribe, who play a very difficult schedule, already competed with against No. 7 Duke and No. 13 Ohio State this season.  Riding a three-game losing streak before Saturday, William & Mary got out to a hot start against the Hatters.

Taelor Salmon scored the first two goals of the game within a minute and a half of each other to give the Tribe a 2-0 lead.  William & Mary went on to score the first eight goals of the game before Stetson's Danielle Horgan put the Hatters on the board with 10:35 to play in the first half.  Her third goal of the season, the freshman scored unassisted to make it 8-1.

After the Tribe countered with another score, the Hatters' Maylis Broderick scored on a free position to cut the deficit to 9-2 with 7:54 remaining in the first period.  It marked the freshman's first career goal.  William & Mary then rattled off four straight to take a 13-2 lead into halftime.

Kyrsten Mackrides, who finished the first half with back-to-back goals, scored the first goal of the second half for the Tribe.  Stetson countered when freshman Paige Levesque scored off of an assist from Mary Kate O'Sullivan to make it 14-3 in favor of William & Mary.  The goal was Levesque's third of the season.

William & Mary then went on to score the final seven goals of the contest, and earn the 21-3 victory.  The Tribe improved to 2-3 on the season, while Stetson fell to 0-4 in its first season for the program.

Stetson freshman Whitney Meyers faced a multitude of shots from the Tribe attack, recording a season high 17 saves for the Hatters.  The goalkeeper also added three ground balls and caused three turnovers in the defeat.

Defender Amanda Parker led Stetson with four ground balls, while Rachel Dumas and O'Sullivan also added three ground balls.  Kelsey Gilbert chipped in with two caused turnovers for the Hatters.

Stetson will next host Presbyterian on Tuesday, March 5.  The Hatters and the Blue Hose are schedule to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
