Freshman Jessica Griffin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Stetson defeated visiting Northern Kentucky 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.
With the victory, the Hatters (20-13, 3-6 A-Sun) picked up their first Atlantic Sun Conference series win of the year.
"I was very proud of the girls, they played great defensively for eight innings," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. "When we got the opportunity at the end, Jessica Griffin stepped up as a freshman and got the job done as though she were a senior, and I was real proud of her."
With the score knotted 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Northern Kentucky (7-23, 1-11) retired the first two batters before Chrissy Morello reached on an error and stole second. Jessica Griffin then worked the count to 2-2 before slicing a single up the middle allowing Morello to sprint home and slide in ahead of the throw with the game-winning run.
Courtney Brandt (7-5) picked up her second straight victory, pitching all eight innings while throwing 124 pitches. She allowed just one run on five hits while walking three and striking out five.
"Courtney is just wild enough to be effective," Frank Griffin said. "Her control has got a lot better, but she still misses the plate a lot, and sometimes that helps a pitcher because it keeps the batters guessing. She pitched out of some tough situations, and I can't say enough about how well she did today and yesterday."
After pitching a two-hit shutout in five innings on Friday, Brandt limited the Norse to just three hits through the five innings Saturday. However, she had to pitch around a lead-off double in the top of the sixth inning, and later she worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the eighth. Both times Brandt ended the inning with a strikeout.
Stetson scored it's first run in the bottom of the first inning as Brittany Hawn scored on an RBI single by Demi Meza.
Dana Jarboe tied the game with a two-out single in the top of the second, and the teams stayed tied until the bottom of the eighth inning.
The win was Stetson's third walk-off victory this season.
The Hatters will travel to USC Upstate next weekend for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The games will be available on ASun.TV.
