The Stetson women’s soccer team dropped its first match of the 2013 season on Friday night.  Senior Victoria Troccoli made five saves as the Hatters lost by a score of 2-0 to Florida International.

After tying with Embry-Riddle and defeating Troy on opening weekend, Stetson played host to FIU in its only game of the second week of action.  Beginning after the Hatter men, approximately scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start, the two teams didn’t get going until 9:10 p.m. due to overtime and a weather delay.

Outshooting the Hatters 5-0 in the first frame, the Panthers got on the board in the 23rd minute.  Kim Lopez assisted on an Ashleigh Shim goal to make it 1-0 in favor of FIU midway through the first half.

Stetson picked things up in the second half, creating a number of opportunities to score, firing off five shots, and garnering two corner kicks in the period.

“I thought we competed really well,” Head Coach Manoj Khettry said. “After the first half, we got our legs underneath us, and our confidence. The second half was fantastic soccer. We played to feet and we created chances.

“I told [the team] there are no moral victories,” Khettry continued. “I want us to come out and compete as well as we did in the second half for 90 minutes. I think if we do that, we’re going to be a very good team.”

A late hand ball in the box gave FIU a penalty kick with just under three minutes to play in the game.  Madlen Weinhardt was able to beat Troccoli to the lower left corner and ultimately put the contest away for the Panthers.

Troccoli finished with a game high five saves, the most for the senior this season, including a punch over the cross bar late in the match that saved a sure goal by FIU.

Stetson, now 1-1-1 on the season, will be off for a week before its next game.  The Hatters travel to Georgia Southern on Friday, September 6 to take on the Eagles at 7:00 p.m.
