The Stetson lacrosse team lost its 2014 home opener to Oregon as the visiting Ducks came away with a 20-3 victory on Monday evening at the Athletic Training Center.
"The positives I can take away from this game were that we had three freshmen contribute with goals or assists," Stetson head coach Nicole Moore said. "Also, Caili Guilday had a very challenging yet successful night in the goal."
Oregon (1-0) came out of the gates on fire, scoring two goals in the first one minute and two seconds of the contest. The Ducks continued to roll through the first half, putting 12 in the back of the net before Stetson picked up its first score.
The Hatters (0-2) scored their first goal of the season when freshman Jill Chiachetti beat Oregon goalkeeper Carol Federighi on a free position attempt to make it 12-1 with just 2:13 to play in the first half.
Stetson cut the deficit to 12-2 before the break with a second straight score. Freshman Julia Lozano scored off an assists from sophomore Mary Kate O’Sullivan with 47 seconds to play in the half.
The Ducks continued their scoring streak in the second half with seven goals in the first 25:11 of the period. Both teams scored late, as sophomore Melanie Fredericks put one away from freshman Lindsay Summers, and Oregon made the final score 20-3 with a score in the final seconds.
Carly O’Connell led the Ducks with five goals, while Nikki Puszcz added four and Courtney Valdez chipped in with three. Shannon Propst was the playmaker for the Ducks, assisting on nine Oregon goals on the day.
Lozano and Chiachetti scored their first career goals for the Hatters, while Summers recorded her first career assist.
Sophomore Caili Guilday recorded 16 saves playing all 60 minutes in goal for the Hatters. Summers led Stetson with four draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers in the defeat.
"Every time we step on the field we get better, mainly because we are still so young," Moore said. "We still need to focus on the fundamentals, our composure, and working together as a team from end line to end line."
Stetson will continue its five-game home-stand on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Hatters host Colorado at 7:00 p.m. from the Athletic Training Center.
