The Stetson men’s soccer team opened exhibition play with a 1-0 home win over Florida Southern on Monday night. Senior Steven Saballos scored the lone goal, capitalizing on a penalty kick opportunity in the second half.

“I saw some bright spots,” Head Coach T. Logan Fleck said. “It took us a while. It took 25 minutes to get a good combination. Stevie Saballos, in the midfield, [he was] running it. It was very good to see Andreas [Schnabl] make a couple of good saves tonight. Now he’s back in form. Of course [when] you get a goal you always feel better about things.”

Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half, but in the second it was Stetson that took the advantage.

Senior Evan Jimmo received a ball in the middle of the field, and played a perfect back heel to a sprinting Dwight Lodge down the right sideline. The sophomore then took his defender head on, beat him inside, and forced a hand ball in the box.

It was then that Saballos stepped up to take the penalty. The senior placed the ball on its spot, struck it confidently, and hit side netting to beat the Florida Southern goalkeeper.

Stetson hung on to win the exhibition 1-0 on Monday night. The Hatters will play their second exhibition of the season on Thursday when they host Florida Tech at 7:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center.
