The Stetson softball team suffered two heartbreaking losses in its first Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader of the season Saturday, falling 5-4 and 5-3 to host Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers.
The Eagles (19-9, 2-0 A-Sun) hit a walk-off home run in each game of the doubleheader and snapped Stetson's nine-game win streak.
Meredith Owen and Jessica Griffin each went deep for the Hatters (15-8, 0-2) while Chrissy Morello had five hits at the plate to extend her hitting streak to 13.
After erasing a 5-0 deficit to defeat Colgate on Wednesday, Stetson nearly pulled off its second straight amazing comeback in game one Saturday. Trailing 4-1 and down their last out, the Hatters rallied for three runs to pull even. Courtney Brandt doubled, Jordan Cleghorn walked, and Kayla Drury singled to load the bases. Brittany Hawn was then hit by a pitch allowing Brandt to score and Morello singled home two more to tie the game 4-4.
Kelsey Carpenter, however, led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to give the Eagles the victory.
In game two, Stetson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run blast to right field by Griffin in the top of the first inning. It was her third home run of the year.
The Hatters added a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Demi Meza.
The Eagles fought back, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to tie the game 3-3.
The game moved to extra innings, where Chelsea Zgrabik, who had a grand slam called back in the fifth inning because she had not been legally re-entered into the contest, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for FGCU.
Stetson will look to take game three of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
