SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Stetson men’s soccer team (1-7-3, 0-2-1) played to a 0-0 double overtime draw on the road at USC Upstate (0-6-2, 0-1-1) on Friday night to earn the Hatters’ first point in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Stetson, which gave up late goals in each of its first two league matches en route to losses last weekend, was able to hang on Friday and shutout the Spartans to pick up the point with a tie. It marked senior goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl’s 14th career shutout, a Hatter record.

It was the back line, and specifically senior Travis Workman, that was getting much of the credit from head coach T. Logan Fleck and the rest of the team Friday night. Workman, who had not played in a single match this season, started and played all 110 minutes in the back against Upstate.

“The back four played very well,” Fleck said. “Travis Workman came in and did very well. It took to the whole team to get this first A-Sun shutout of the season. It wasn’t a win, but it’s always good to get a point.”

“It was nice to get a point,” senior defender JJ Bostic echoed. “We showed maturity. Travis stepped up and worked his heart out. The whole team worked hard tonight. Unfortunately we weren’t able to get the win, but we were able to get our second shutout of the season, and a point is a point.”

A fairly even match throughout, Stetson and USC Upstate both finished with eight shots. The Hatters were able to record six corner kicks, while the Spartans finished with four. Schnabl made four saves for Stetson, and Dani Alvarado stopped two shots for Upstate.

Stetson will continue the weekend road trip at ETSU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Johnson City, Tenn.
