MORAGA, Calif. – The Stetson lacrosse team opened its two-game Pacific Coast road trip with a loss to St. Mary’s on Friday night. The Gaels (3-6) defeated the Hatters (0-10) by a score of 19-2 at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
St. Mary’s scored less than one minute into the game and went on to take a 16-0 lead at halftime. Jillian Chong led the Gaels with four goals in the first frame, while Allie DeBruhl added three during the first 30 minutes of action.
The Hatters were able to get on the board first in the second half, as freshman Danielle Horgan tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season to make it 16-1. The Gaels scored just less than 10 minutes later, before freshman Maylis Broderick countered with her eighth goal of the year with just over 12 minutes to play.
St. Mary’s ended on a two-goal run to finish with the 19-2 victory. The Gaels used a 27-13 shot advantage, and won 16 draw controls to Stetson’s seven, to pick up their third straight home victory of the season.
Stetson was successful on eight of 12 clear attempts, while St. Mary’s went 8-for-8. The Gaels also led the Hatters 17-7 on ground balls, and 21-25 on turnovers.
Freshman Amanda Parker picked up two ground balls to lead the Hatters, while freshman Mary Kate O’Sullivan garnered a team-best five draw controls. Parker also led the team causing two turnovers in the defeat.
Stetson will next continue the road trip with a contest at California on Monday. The Hatters and the Golden Bears will begin at 4:00 p.m. from Berkely, Calif.
