The Stetson women’s soccer team dropped its third straight match, falling to Atlantic Sun Conference regular season champion Florida Gulf Coast by a score of 4-0 on Saturday evening at the Athletic Training Center.

It was definitely not a disappointing weekend overall for the Hatters though. After A-Sun competition completed on Friday night, the Hatters (6-9-2, 4-4-1) earned a berth into the league championship for the first time since 2010.

Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry, who brought St. Bonaventure to five straight conference tournaments in seven seasons with the Bonnies, has brought that tradition to DeLand in just his first season with the Hatters.

Also cause for celebration was the fact that Saturday was Senior Day for the Hatters, as six members of the Stetson team were honored prior to the match. Victoria Troccoli, Amber Grose, Virginia Davis, Alexis Trybinski, Alyssa Welsh, and Kait Jones were congratulated and celebrated by coaches, family, and fans for what they have brought to the Stetson program during their careers.

Not in the Hatters favor on Saturday, however, was the result. Florida Gulf Coast (12-3-3, 6-0-3) came away with a 4-0 victory over Stetson to finish the A-Sun regular season undefeated. The Eagles clinched the regular season title after Friday night’s competition in league play.

FGCU scored two goals in the first half, both by Tabitha Tindell to take the lead at the break. The Eagles followed that up with a pair of scores in the second 45 minutes, including a third by Tindell to make the final score 4-0.

FGCU outshot the Hatters 21-6, taking a number of shots from distance. Junior Amber Law, replacing the injured Troccoli in goal, made 10 saves for the Hatters in the defeat. Brittany Brown totaled four saves for the Eagles in the victory.

Stetson will play in an A-Sun Tournament First Round contest on Saturday, Nov. 2 at a campus site. The semifinals and finals, scheduled for Nov. 8 and 10, will be played in Fort Myers.
