Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – The Stetson University women’s golf battled through some rainy conditions on Monday at the Marsh Landing Country Club to post scores of 304 and 300, good for third place.
The rain continued on Tuesday, forcing the cancellation of the final round of the tournament.
The Hatters finished just two shots behind Atlantic Sun Conference foe North Florida after making up seven shots against the Ospreys in the second round. UNF posted a 295 in the opening round to take the early lead, but was unable to hold off nationally ranked College of Charleston.
The Cougars followed an opening round 297 with a 293 in the second round and took a 12 shot victory over UNF (602). Stetson (604), Daytona State (606), Wofford (607) and Troy (608) rounded out the top half of the field.
The Hatters were led by freshman Giulia Vandenberg, who posted consecutive scores of one-over par 73. Her two round total of 146 left her three shots behind tournament champion Jacqueline Shelly of Florida Atlantic.
Fellow freshman Alessandra Kutz also had a spot in the top 10, tying for eighth place after posting rounds of 75 and 74 for a total score 149.
Senior Mallory Viera bounced back with a second round 75 after a pair of triple bogeys in the opening round left her with a 79. She tied for 26th with a score of 154.
“Giulia and Alessandra both played well most of the day,” Hatters coach Floyd Kerr said. “Mallory really just had those two bad holes that kept her from having a good day.
“It was really tough out there with the weather. It would rain hard for a while, then stop, then just spit for a while before raining hard again.”
