DELAND, Fla. – With a looming rainstorm on the horizon, the Stetson University women’s tennis team made quick work of Mercer, 5-0 Friday afternoon in a rain shortened A-Sun match-up with the Bears.

The Hatters saw wins from all five completed singles matches before the sixth and final one was called off due to the inclimate weather that hit the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Wanting to make sure Stetson and Mercer played the majority of their scheduled matches; no doubles were played because of the threatening skies. Both teams jumped right into singles action to begin play, with Stetson grabbing a quick 1-0 lead with a win from Eveline Lepinay (6-0, 6-3) on court No. 5.

MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell followed up Lepinay’s victory with one of her own (6-1, 6-1) on court No. 4 and then Isabella Fernandez (6-1, 6-2) and Lindsey Cable (6-2, 6-4) each earned wins on court No.’s 3 and 6 respectively to clinch the Stetson victory.

Diana Bukajeva, playing on court No. 1 claimed the Hatters’ fifth and final victory of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-2 decision, before rains washed away Andrea Crespo’s match on court No. 2, leading 6-4, 5-4.

“The ladies played an excellent match today under the constant threat of rain,” said Director of Stetson Tennis Pierre Pilote. “It is always difficult to play in such situations because you don’t want to play too fast but you also want to get your match in.”

The Stetson women wore pink on Friday instead of their normal green and white for breast cancer awareness, Saturday’s match will mark the Hatters’ senior day ceremonies.

“Our pink match to raise awareness for breast cancer was a success, many fans showed their support for both our team and the cause,” Pilote said.

With the victory Stetson improved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in A-Sun play. The Hatters will have a chance to break the .500 mark, Saturday as they host Kennesaw State. The Owls take the court against the home standing Hatters at Mandy Stoll at 10 a.m.
