MACON, Ga. – The Stetson women’s tennis team (9-5, 4-0) won its fourth straight Atlantic Sun Conference match to start league play, defeating Mercer (4-10, 0-3) by a score of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in Macon.

The only thing that prevented the Hatters’ from recording their sixth sweep of the season was an injury.  Junior Lindsey Cable was forced to retire at Kennesaw State on Friday, while both her doubles and singles matches were defaulted on Saturday.

Stetson won both of the other doubles contests against the Bears, as junior Diana Bukajeva and senior Jen Miller won 8-1 at number two doubles to start things off.  Freshman Andrea Crespo and senior Sara Lazarevic then won 8-2 at the number one position to earn Stetson the first points of the match.

After the defaulted match at number six tied it up at 1-1, the Hatters won the final five singles tilts, to leave Macon with the 6-1 victory.  None of the five competing Stetson players lost a set, as Bukajeva finished first with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number three to give her team a 2-1 lead.

Miller followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number four, and Crespo won 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the victory for the Hatters.  Lazarevic had a tough 7-6 first set win before cruising 6-0 in set number two.  Freshman Eveline Lepinay finished up play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number five.

“We had a very successful weekend,” Stetson assistant coach Christophe Noblet said. “Getting two wins on the road is never an easy task. The team is improving match by match, which is promising for the important upcoming conference contests.”

Stetson will now return home to host East Tennessee State on Thursday, March 28.  The Hatters and the Bucs will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
