The Stetson lacrosse team came out firing Thursday night, putting a season high 11 goals in the net during a 15-11 loss to Old Dominion at the Athletic Training Center. The Hatters out scored and outshot the Monarchs in the second half, but ODU’s six goal-lead at halftime was too much to overcome.

After Old Dominion jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage, freshman Christina Wittmeier gave the Hatters their first goal of the night with an unassisted score at the 21 minute mark of the first half. Wittmeier’s goal was the first of three straight Stetson scores, as freshman Christina Loya and sophomore Paige Levesque each put the ball in the net during a six-minute stretch to make it 5-3 Monarchs.

Old Dominion answered the Hatter rally with six straight goals of its own, making it 11-3 with less than three minutes remaining in the half. Two quick scores by Levesque and freshman Ana Baranowski closed the ODU margin to 11-5 at the break.

Following intermission the Stetson defense went to work, holding the Monarchs scoreless nine minutes into the second half, when they netted three goals in a two-minute stretch. It was Stetson though, that would do the majority of the scoring in the second frame. Head Coach Nicole Moore’s squad surged back, putting the ball in the net a total of six times during the final 30 minutes. Unassisted scores by Maylis Broderick, Sam Maguire and Danielle Horgan highlighted the action as Broderick added another goal with less than a minute remaining to make it 15-11 ODU.

The Hatters had seven different players score goals Thursday evening, with four netting a pair of scores. Horgan, Levesque, Loya and Broderick each scored two in the defeat. Horgan and Levesque both took a team high five shots, while Loya and Baranowski added three. Baranowski, Loya, Lindsay Summers and Mary Kate O’Sullivan all earned assists.

Stetson won the majority of the draw controls in the game (15-11), and converted on more free position shots than the Monarchs (4-2). The Hatters’ 13 shots in the second half were two more than Old Dominion’s 11 and SU’s 13 total clears were just one less than Old Dominion’s 14.

The 11 goals scored by the Hatters surpassed their previous high this season of five, which they scored against Cincinnati. Their offensive output was the third most in school history. In goal, sophomore Caili Guilday made 10 stops for Stetson. Guilday and Wittmeier both lead the team in ground balls for the game with five apiece.

Stetson next takes the field against Holy Cross, this Sunday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at the ATC. Video will be available on HatterVision. Live Stats, the @StetsonLacrosse Twitter feed, and Hat-Alerts will also be available for in-game updates.
