Stetson freshman Christina Loya scored three goals and added an assist in the Stetson lacrosse team’s 17-5 loss to Cincinnati Friday night at the Athletic Training Center. The five goals by Stetson was a season high.
Cincinnati tallied its first goal just 45 seconds into the game and would continue to add to its lead until freshman Ana Baranowski scored the first Stetson goal, making it 10-1 Bearcats. Cincinnati closed out the first half scoring two more times and outshooting the Hatters 21-5 in the first frame.
Stetson made adjustments during halftime and came out in the second half firing. Head coach Nicole Moore’s squad scored the first goal of the second half, Loya’s first of the night. After two Bearcat scores, Loya struck again, making it 14-3 off a second straight assist from sophomore Paige Levesque.
The Hatter freshman added her third off of an assist from freshman Sam Maguire with 6:53 to play in the game. In the final five minutes Cincinnati sealed it with two goals sandwiched around a score by Stetson sophomore Mallory Tluchowski.
The Hatters outshot the Bearcats 11-8 in the second half and edged their non-conference foes 6-4 in draw controls during the final 30 minutes. Ground balls were even in the second half at four apiece.
Levesque led all Stetson players with a pair of assists, while Loya and Maguire each were credited with one.
In goal, sophomore Caili Guilday made eight saves in just over 30 minutes of action, allowing 10 Cincinnati scores. Fellow sophomore Whitney Meyers allowed seven goals and made one stop in just less than 30 minutes of play.
The defeat dropped Stetson to 0-4 on the season as Cincinnati improved to 1-1. The Hatters will next play Old Dominion, Thursday, Feb. 27 at the ATC. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be Stetson’s fourth in its current five-game home stand.
