The Stetson men’s tennis team (13-2, 4-1) fell to ETSU (6-6, 2-1) by a score of 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, snapping its three-match winning streak.
The match began with ETSU winning two of the three doubles matches to secure an early 1-0 advantage over Stetson. After ETSU and Stetson split the first two doubles contests, it came down to the duo of freshman Cahit Kapukiran and sophomore Nathan Debut.
The pair battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the match, forcing a tiebreak at 8-8. However, ETSU’s Roger Ordeig and Ricardo Pabon came out victorious, winning by a score of 9-8 (4).
In singles, the Bucs took five of the six matches on the day. At the number one singles position, Berg lost to Bandres, who is currently ranked 120th in the nation by ITA. Stetson’s only win of the day came from Kapukiran, who defeated Jorge Varon by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).
Freshman Simon Julin had has 13-match winning streak snapped on Thursday, falling to Rogerio Ribeiro 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the number two singles position.
Stetson is back in action on Saturday, when the Hatters host USC Upstate. The Hatters and the Spartans will begin tentatively at 2:00 p.m., after the women compete.
Match notes: Started 4-0 in conference play before today’s match… Julin has won A-Sun player of the week the past two weeks … Stetson has not beaten ETSU since the Bucs joined the A-Sun in 2005.
