DELAND, Fla. – Led by a half dozen goals off the stick of freshman Ana Baranowski, the Stetson University lacrosse team cruised to its second win of the season, 18-8 vs. Howard, Sunday afternoon at the Athletic Training Center.

Baranowski’s six scores were a season high and goalie Caili Guilday made 10 stops as Stetson improved to 2-3 in the A-Sun and 2-15 overall, securing a spot in next week’s A-Sun Championship. The Hatters technically clinched a spot in the conference tournament, Saturday with Kennesaw State’s loss to Detroit, but wanted to earn a berth on their own terms, and did just that, putting forth their second highest offensive output all season.

The scoring frenzy began four minutes into the contest with an unassisted score from Danielle Horgan and continued with nine more Stetson scores in the first half to Howard’s pair of goals, to make it 10-2 at halftime.

Baranowski accumulated half of her six scores in the game’s first 30 minutes and then continued her offensive onslaught with three more in a seven minute stretch early in the second half.

“It was all about the game plan and we executed it so perfectly,” Baranowski said following the season finale. “The energy was amazing coming into the game and even at half time as well as during all of our time outs.”

Also scoring multiple times for Stetson on Sunday were Christina Loya (4), Horgan (2) and Mary Kate O’Sullivan (2). The quartet of players accounted for 14 of the Hatters’ 18 goals vs. a Bison team which finished the season winless in the A-Sun (0-5) and 1-14 overall.

Guilday’s 10 saves in the contest pushed her nation leading total to 197 and marked the 13th time this season she reached double-digit save totals.

“I saw the ball, made the saves and cleared it out right away so we could take it down the field and score,” Guilday said. “I am really proud that we played together as a team and we are going to carry this (momentum) forward to the A-Sun Championship.”

The Hatters edged Howard in almost every offensive and defensive category, outshooting them 36-25, and making more saves, 12-8. Stetson also had more ground balls (30-17), as well as successful clear attempts (8-3), but the Bison claimed the draw control advantage, with their 17 to the Hatters’ 11.

Baranowski not only had the most goals (6) on Sunday for Stetson, but also took the most shots (7). Horgan, O’Sullivan and Maylis Broderick each led the way with a pair of assists, while Lindsay Summers and O’Sullivan had the second most ground balls (4), to Guilday’s team leading nine. Baranowski and Summers won the most draw controls with three apiece.

Stetson has now defeated Howard two times in a row, and ironically enough both Hatter wins in 2013 and 2014 have come against Kennesaw State and the same Bison team.

Also for the second straight season Stetson will be making an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Championship, with semifinals action to be taking place May 2nd in Jacksonville. Pairings as well as team seedings will be announced by the conference office early next week.

POST GAME NOTES
--Stetson has now outscored Howard 36-21 in two meetings, netting 18 goals apiece in each contest.
--The 18 goals scored by the Hatters on Sunday were second only to the 23 the put in the net at Kennesaw State (Apr. 5).
