KENNESAW, Ga. – Danielle Horgan and Christina Loya combined for 13 goals as for the second straight year, the Stetson University lacrosse team beat Kennesaw State for its first A-Sun victory of the season. The Hatters downed the Owls in thrilling fashion Saturday, 23-21 in overtime, as five different players scored goals in the extra frame to seal the win for Stetson.

Goal Keeper Caili Guilday made 14 saves in the win as Stetson earned its first victory of 2014 in its first conference game. The 23 goals scored by SU set a new program record.

The Hatters came out firing against the Owls as they scored just 32 seconds into the contest and then another one less than two minutes later to make it a quick 2-0 lead. KSU did not take the two goal deficit lying down as it sent the ball into the net a total of nine times during the course of the next 15 minutes, to make it 9-4 Kennesaw State with a little more than 10 minutes left to play in the first half.

Undeterred from its opponent’s sudden rash of scoring, the Stetson offense went to work, reeling off six more goals to close out the half, making it an even 10-10 after the first 30 minutes of play. Horgan netted five goals during the first half, while Loya added a pair to give the Hatters some much needed momentum heading into the second half.

All knotted up to begin play during the final 30 minutes, the two teams traded goals for the first two minutes of the frame, until Stetson went on a 7-2 run to grab an 18-14 lead with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

From that juncture, the Owls scored four unanswered goals during a seven minute stretch to even things up at 18-18 as the buzzer sounded on the second half, sending Stetson to its first overtime contest in program history.

Kennesaw State picked up where it left off in overtime, scoring a pair of goals to begin the five minute frame to make it 20-18. Five Stetson goals in the next three and a half minutes put the Owl rally to rest, as the Hatters closed out KSU, 23-21 on their home field.

Horgan finished the game with a team high seven goals, while Loya scored six. Maylis Broderick netted a hat trick, as Ana Baranowski, Lindsay Summers and Christina Wittmeier each scored two. Horgan led the Hatters with five ground balls, while MaryKate O’Sullivan was not too far off Horgan’s pace at four.

The duo of Horgan and Loya was a near perfect one as both players combined for 15 shots to go along with their 13 goals. Baranowski had a half dozen shots in the win as Broderick fired off five attempts.

Looking at team stats, the Hatters and Owls were fairly even in ground balls (KSU 42, SU 39), while Kennesaw outshot Stetson 26-15 in the first half and 18-13 in the second. The Hats’ seven shots in overtime to KSU’s five proved to be the difference though, as Stetson scored five goals in the extra frame to the Owls’ three.

Stetson was a perfect seven for seven on clears and converted on nine free position shots to Kenensaw State’s four. The Hatters also were tops in saves with 14 to the Owls’ eight.

In 2013, Stetson defeated Kennesaw 19-7 in DeLand for its first win and first A-Sun win in program history. Fast forward a year later and it was another set of firsts as Stetson earned its first ever overtime win.

The Hatters (1-12, 1-0) next take on Jacksonville, Saturday, Apr. 12 at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the ATC.
