JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Stetson University lacrosse team saw its season come to an end Friday, with a 20-4 loss to No. 1 seed Jacksonville in the A-Sun Championship Semifinals. Four different players scored goals for the No. 4 seeded Hatters as goal keeper Caili Guilday made a dozen saves in Stetson’s second straight trip to the conference tournament.
Stetson and Jacksonville began the game at Southern Oak Stadium (JU’s home field) under rainy conditions, but the host Dolphins did not show any signs of slowing down despite the bad weather. JU came out firing and scored a total of five goals in the game’s first 10 minutes.
Heading into the half, JU held a 14-0 advantage over Stetson but the Hatters had a second half surge, posting four goals in the game’s final 30 minutes. Mary Kate O’Sullivan was the first Hatter to score as she put one past Dolphin keeper Mariah Cudlipp, to make it 16-1 with 22:54 remaining.
Another 13 minutes passed before Stetson’s next score as Lindsay Summers and Christina Loya made it back-to-back Hatter goals and cut the JU lead to 19-3. Then Jill Chiachetti added the final Stetson goal of the day as she put one in the net with just three and a half minutes remaining.
Stetson finished the season 2-16 overall and 2-3 in the A-Sun, having made it to the conference championship in both years of the program’s existence. Jacksonville’s victory put them in Sunday’s A-Sun Championship Game for the second straight season.
Guilday’s 12 saves gave her a nation leading total of 209, and she finished the year having 14 games with double-digit save totals. Christina Loya ended the season tops in goals on Stetson with 23, while Danielle Horgan was the overall points champion at 31, and she also had the most assists (12).
