HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Stetson men's soccer team (2-7-2, 1-3-1) dropped a 1-0 game on the road against Northern Kentucky (6-8-1, 3-1-1) on Sunday afternoon. The Hatters will now return home to host North Florida and ETSU and work themselves back into Atlantic Sun Conference contention.
"We didn't play well enough for the full 90 minutes to come away with a win," Head Coach T. Logan Fleck said after the game. "I haven't lost any faith in the guys' ability to do what we need to do to win, but we need to find ways to play better for each other, and that may be in our preparation."
It was a lone goal in the 34th minute that gave the Norse their third conference victory. Craig Heard crossed the ball to an open Nick Toney, who headed it to the right post and put it in the back of the net with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first period.
With three yellow cards on Northern Kentucky and a red card on Stetson's Luis Ocejo late in the contest, the match wasn't without its drama. The Hatters battled, but weren't able to tie the game with any of their five second half shots.
The Norse outshot Stetson 12-9 for the game and recorded five corner kicks to Stetson's two. Junior goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl made three saves for the Hatters, while NKU's A.J. Fleak totaled four for the Norse.
Stetson, now 2-7-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in league play, will host North Florida on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. in a "Coaches vs. Cancer" contest. The Hatters will then play ETSU on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
