|Aloha! Stetson Rallies Four Times To Sweep Colgate|
Freshman Brittany Hawn's two-run walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a wild 8-7 Stetson victory over visiting Colgate in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday night at Patricia Wilson Field.
The Hatters (15-6) also won in come-from-behind fashion in game one, 6-3, and extended their winning streak to nine games in a row.
Chelsea Whalley homered twice, doubled twice, and drove in five runs in the doubleheader. Courtney Brandt and Jordan Cleghorn also homered, and Meredith Owen (12-2) picked up two wins in the circle.
"I was really pleased with our attitude," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. "In the first game we were down 3-1 and came back to win, and in the second game we were down 5-0 in the sixth inning, and to be able to tie it up, then be down another run, then tie it up, then down another, then eventually win by a run, it was just an exciting night."
It was indeed exciting as the Hatters scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning in game two, all with two outs, to erase a 5-0 deficit. Whalley doubled home a pair of runs, Brandt singled home Whalley, and then Cleghorn tied the game with her first home run of the season.
"I was just really focused on putting the ball in play," Cleghorn said. "I have been struggling a lot, and I've changed some things like where I stand in relation to the plate. Coach gave me the take sign on the inside strike, then he let me swing away, and I got a pitch up and in."
Colgate plated a single run in the top of the seventh inning to regain a 6-5 lead, but Stetson answered with an RBI single by Jessica Griffin that sent the game into extra innings tied at six.
The Raiders (0-9) took advantage of the international tie-break rules as their free baserunner eventually came around to score on a Eileen Ornousky's ground out to short.
However, the Hatters fought back for the third inning in a row. Cleghorn sacrificed Stetson's free baserunner, Brandt, to third, and after Kayla Drury drew a walk, Hawn ripped one into the right centerfield gap scoring both runners to send Stetson home a winner.
It was the Hatters' first walk-off hit in Patricia Wilson Field history that scored both the tying and winning runs on the same play.
"Some of the freshmen were very impressive under pressure," Griffin said. "Kayla Drury had a great at-bat and drew a walk, and then Brittany Hawn comes to the plate and hits one into the gap. What can I say? She did it when we needed it the most."
Stetson also found itself trailing late in game one, but Whalley's second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left, tied it 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
Brandt followed with a solo shot to give Stetson the lead, and Hawn and Chrissy Morello each recorded RBI doubles to add some insurance.
Owen (12-2) pitched a complete game in game one and worked the eighth inning in game two to add a pair of wins to her conference leading total.
Brandt started game two and pitched three innings while Taylor Cochran worked four innings of relief.
"Tonight was awesome and it took an enitre team effort," Cleghorn said. "This just shows what we can do during conference. I honestly think if we can keep hitting like we are all throughout line-up then we are going to do great."
Stetson will begin Atlantic Sun play with a three-game series at Florida Gulf Coast beginning Saturday.
Notes: Stetson has won 14 out of 15 and went 13-1 on the 14-game homestand ... Chrissy Morello extended her hitting streak to 11 games, doing so in her last at-bat in each game ... Morello and Jessica Griffin have reached base safely in 20 straight games ... Stetson's five run comeback is its largest at Patricia Wilson Field since rallying from a 7-2 deficit to defeat USF 8-7 in 2005 ... It was Stetson's 39th walk-off win at Patricia Wilson Field, and the previous 38 all came with the score tied ... It worked for women's basketball, so the Hatters chanted "I believe that we will win!" several times during the comeback in game two.
