Final Round Rally Gives Hatters Tie For Third

DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson men's golf team shot the low team score of the day, a two under par 286, in the final round of the Stetson/Central Florida Sports Commission Invitational to finish in a tie for third place at Victoria Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.  Three Hatters shot even par or better; junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) shot 70 and came in third overall at four under par.

Besides Ryder, senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) also shot 70 (the two lowest scores in the field for the third round) and sophomore Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) carded even par 72.  Costa tied for sixth place at one under par for the week while Jacobsen tied for 17th at +10.  Junior Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) had a 75 and tied for 24th (+12) while junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) came in with a 74 for a +14 overall score and a tie for 29th place.   Sophomore Adam Kipi (Oviedo, Fla.) competed as an individual and also tied for 29th after his final round 78.

Ryder finished just two strokes behind tournament medalist Daniel Mazziotta of FGCU (-6) and one behind runner-up Brad Sill of USC Upstate.  Alex Medinis (FGCU) and Tom Robson (Jacksonville State) tied for fourth place at two under par.

Florida Gulf Coast cruised to a seven under par 857 total for 54 holes and a 10-stroke victory over Jacksonville State.  Stetson and USC Upstate tied for third at +14 with Bethune-Cookman (+31), Florida Atlantic (+38), Murray State (+40), Lipscomb (+67) and Florida A&M (+115) completing the field.

This week's competition marked the end of Stetson's fall schedule.  The spring season begins February 28, 2011 at the Wendy's Charleston Shootout in Charleston, S.C.
