Charleston, S.C. - The Stetson men's golf team began the 54-hole Charleston Shootout, its first full-field tournament of the spring, on Monday with rounds of 298 and 293 to stand in eighth place out of 15 teams with one round to go; the Hatters are 15 over par overall.  Senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot even par 72 in the morning and two under par 70 in the afternoon to put himself in a tie for fourth place individually out of 75 golfers.

Costa began his day in style with an eagle at the par five 17th, his first hole of the day in a shotgun start.  He would go on to birdie holes 1, 2 and 3 and eventually come in at even par 72.  The 17th was not as kind the second time around as Costa bogeyed that hole and #1, but he would rally with four consecutive birdies at 4, 5, 6 and 7, par out and come in with a solid two under round of 70.  He is tied with Alex Ellis (College of Charleston) and Brian Horton (USC Upstate) at -2, seven strokes behind tournament leader Vaita Guillaume of Campbell, who blistered the Links at Stono Ferry to the tune of 64-71.  Charleston Southern's Jacobo Pastor is second at -4 with Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen holding third at three under par.

In other Stetson action, junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) shot 75-74 and is tied for 30th, sophomore Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) began with an even par 72 before slipping to a 79 in the afternoon, redshirt junior Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) reversed Jacobsen's totals with 79-72 and junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) came in with rounds of 79-77.

Baylor leads the tournament at four under par, five strokes ahead of second place College of Charleston.  Radford (+7), Campbell (+8), Charleston Southern (+10), USC Upstate (+12) and Gardner-Webb (+13) also currently lead the 15 over par Hatters with Longwood (+21), High Point (+23), Villanova (+25), Newberry (+25), Presbyterian (+30), Western Kentucky (+33) and Navy (+44) rounding out the field.

The Charleston Shootout concludes tomorrow with a final round of 18 holes.  Live Scoring can be found at the following link:
