Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot three under par 69 in the first round of the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate on Sunday, putting himself in second place out of 73 players after 18 holes. The top three spots on the individual leaderboard are all occupied by Atlantic Sun Conference golfers. As a team, Stetson shot six over par 294 and is in fourth place out of 12 teams, 10 strokes off the lead.
Costa's 69 leaves him trailing Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy by just two strokes with Campbell's Zak Drescher, Gardner-Webb's Steve Jones and Daniel Walsh of tournament host Appalachian State right behind at -2. Stetson junior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) shot one over par 73 and is right in the thick of things as well in a tie for 16th.
Rounding out the Hatter contingent are junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.), who shot 75, freshman Matt Lawrence (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) with a 77 and junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) with an 84.
Kennesaw State holds the team lead at four under par 284 with former A-Sun member Gardner-Webb in second place, five strokes behind the Owls. Current A-Sun rival Campbell is at +5, just one stroke ahead of the Hatters. James Madison (+7), George Washington (+11), St. Bonaventure (+12), George Mason (+18), Wright State (+18), Appalachian State (+22), Anderson (+25) and North Dakota (+34) round out the field.
The tournament continues tomorrow at the Surf Golf and Beach Club and concludes with the final round on Tuesday.
