Braselton, Ga. - The Stetson men's golf team concluded the 2010-11 season on Wednesday with a 10th place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships at Chateau Elan Resort's Chateau course. Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) tied for sixth at one under par overall while senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) tied for 10th at one over par. Freshman Matt Lawrence (Naples, Fla.) shot a career-low two under par 69 to lead the Hatters in the final round.
Stetson struggled in the first two rounds of the tournament but managed to play mostly strong golf on the final day as Lawrence paved the way with a 69, Costa shot one under par 70 and Ryder carded even par 71. Ryder shot even par or better in every round. Juniors Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) and Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) finished with tournament-low scores of 75 and 77, respectively.
Kennesaw State cruised to its first A-Sun title victory, finishing seven under par for 54 holes, nine strokes ahead of second place North Florida. Campbell took third in its final appearance in the event at three over par with Mercer (+8), ETSU (+9), FGCU (+14), USC Upstate (+14), Belmont (+22), Jacksonville (+24), Stetson (+27) and Lipscomb (+48) rounding out the field.
KSU also claimed the individual hardware as Jeff Karlsson came in at six under par to win by three strokes over teammate Matt Nagy as well as Campbell's Matt Moot, UNF's Kevin Phelan and Mercer's Hans Reimers. Ryder tied for sixth at one under par with Alex Medinis of FGCU.
Four of the five golfers that competed for Stetson in the conference championships are slated to return in 2011-12 with only Costa lost to graduation.
