Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) set a Stetson men's golf program record on Monday with a blazing seven under par round of 65 to lead an outstanding charge by the Hatters in the second round of the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate. As a team, Stetson recorded a 13 under par 275 score, just one stroke off the school record it set at the 2009 Sea Trail Intercollegiate just up the road in Sunset Beach, N.C.
Ryder's 65 took him from three over par to four under par after 36 holes, good for a tie for third with senior teammate Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.). Costa followed up his first round 69 with a one under par 71 to hang around the individual lead, yet both are five strokes behind Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy and two back from Gardner-Webb's Steve Jones.
Junior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) shot even par 72 to move into a tie for 14th at +1 overall while junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) had the best round of his Hatter career, firing a five under par 67 after an opening 84; he stands in a tie for 39th place at +7. Freshman Matt Lawrence (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) tallied a 72 for a five-stroke improvement over Sunday and is tied for 33rd at five over par.
Kennesaw State went well under par for the second straight day to maintain first place in the team standings at -11, two strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb (-9) and four ahead of the Hatters (-7). These three are likely the only title contenders left heading into Tuesday's final round with Campbell (+9), George Washington (+16), James Madison (+17), St. Bonaventure (+22), host Appalachian State (+29), George Mason (+34), Anderson (+35), Wright State (+35) and North Dakota (+57) completing the field.
