Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Stetson men's golf team wrapped up the Appalachian State-hosted Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a four under par round of 284, enabling the Hatters to finish 11 under par for the 54-hole event and hold onto third place in the final team standings. Senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot three under par 69 to lead the Hatters; he tied for third individually at -7 on the week.
Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) followed up the school-record 65 he shot yesterday with a round of one under par 71 on Tuesday, finishing sixth in the 73-golfer field at five under par. Junior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) finished with a 73 and a 16th-place tie at +2 while freshman Matt Lawrence (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) bettered his score for the second straight day, shooting 71 and tying for 23rd place at +4. Junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) rounded out the Stetson contingent with a final round 74 and a tie for 40th at nine over par for the tournament.
Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy completed his wire-to-wire victory with a final round 68, taking home the individual trophy at -13, four strokes ahead of South Carolina individual Caulder Moore and six ahead of Costa and Nagy's KSU teammate Jeff Karlsson. Gardner-Webb's Daniel Kim was fifth at -6, just one stroke ahead of Ryder.
Kennesaw State also won the team championship at 19 under par, six strokes ahead of runner-up Gardner-Webb and eight up on the third place Hatters. Campbell finished a distant fourth at three over par while James Madison (+12), George Washington (+22), St. Bonaventure (+32), host Appalachian State (+39), George Mason (+45), Anderson (+48), Wright State (+53) and North Dakota (+87) also competed in the event.
Stetson next tees it up this weekend at the St. John's Spring Fling Intercollegiate in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. March 11-13.
