Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Junior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) and the Stetson men's golf team each hoisted championship trophies on Sunday with individual and team victories in the Mission Inn Spring Fling Intercollegiate, hosted by St. John's at the Mission Inn Resort Las Colinas course. The Hatters came in at 21 over par for 54 holes for a three-stroke victory over IPFW and 12 other teams while Ryder finished four under par and won by three shots in the medalist competition.
Ryder carded scores of 72-70-70 for his first win of the season and third of his college career, joining the 2009 Bethune-Cookman Invitational and 2010 JSU/Grub Mart Intercollegiate in his trophy case. Senior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) shot 72-74-73 for a fourth place finish at three over par while junior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) tied for 19th (81-72-75 = +12), junior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) tied for 26th (74-81-75 = +14) and senior Michael Stewart (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) tied for 51st at +20 with scores of 79-79-78.
Charles Cote of Laval University (Canada) came in second at -1, three behind Ryder and IPFW's Drew Inel was third at +2. Ryder was tied for fourth at even par after the first round, seized the overnight lead at -2 with a 70 on Saturday and tied for low round in the field Sunday with another 70 to take the victory.
Stetson won a team title for the first time since the 2009-10 season-opening Elon Sea Trail Intercollegiate, beating out IPFW by three and Laval by 13 strokes. Appalachian State (+42), Lehigh (+44), Western Kentucky (+47), Saint Leo (+48), Bethune-Cookman (+53), Morehead State (+53), Central Connecticut (+62), St. Thomas Aquinas (+69), Boston College (+70) and Adelphi (+113) completed the field.
Next up for the Hatters will be the JSU/Grub Mart Intercollegiate in Gadsden, Ala. Ryder will attempt to defend his title at that event March 28-29.
