Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Stetson men's golf team struggled to a 34 over par 322 in the first round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic on Sunday and finds itself 20th of 21 teams with 36 holes to play. Senior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) was the low scorer for the Hatters on Sunday with a six over par 78.
Ryder was the only Hatter to break 80 on the opening day at Turtle Point Golf Course, a tough track that yielded just eight birdies to Stetson in 90 combined holes. Ryder is tied for 40th out of 105 golfers. Senior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) shot 80 with senior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Blake Snellings (Atlanta, Ga.) each carding 10 over par 82. Freshman Matt Taylor (Naples, Fla.) rounded out the Stetson contingent with an 84.
Campbell's Vaita Guillaume leads the tournament at three under par, nine strokes ahead of Ryder and one better than the George Washington duo of Andres Pumariega and Jack Persons that is tied for second.
Former A-Sun rival Campbell leads the large team field at four over par, seven strokes ahead of A-Sun champion Kennesaw State and eight ahead of tournament host Charleston Southern. Also ahead of the Hatters after Round 1 are George Washington (+13), Jacksonville State (+17), Bradley (+17), Presbyterian (+19), Murray State (+21), IUPUI (+22), Miami [Ohio] (+24), Butler (+25), Minnesota (+25), Towson (+26), Connecticut (+29), Wisconsin (+30), USC Upstate (+31), Creighton (+32), St. John's (+32) and William & Mary (+33). The Hatters lead Western Kentucky (+41).
