Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Stetson men's golf team improved on their first round score by 21 strokes in Tuesday's second round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club, rising from 20th place to 15th on the leaderboard. Senior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) returned to form with an even par 72.
Stetson opened with a 34 over par 322 yesterday but improved that to 13 over par 301 today and now stands at +47 through 36 holes of the 54-hole event. Freshmen Matt Taylor (Naples, Fla.) and Blake Snellings (Atlanta, Ga.) shot career-lows of 74 and 75, respectively, to supplement Ryder's effort while the final counting score for the team was delivered by senior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) with an eight over par 80. Senior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) struggled to an 85. Ryder is tied for 22nd at six over par overall.
Jacobo Pastor of tournament host Charleston Southern leads the tournament at -4 heading into the final round, one stroke ahead of Andres Pumariega (George Washington) and Patrick Newcomb (Murray State). Ryder is 10 strokes off the lead.
Campbell holds the team lead at eight over par 584, two strokes ahead of defending A-Sun champion Kennesaw State. Charleston Southern is third at 13 over par with Jacksonville State (+20) and George Washington (+26) rounding out the top five. Also leading the Hatters so far are Bradley (+31), Minnesota (+33), Presbyterian (+37), Wisconsin (+38), Butler (+38), IUPUI (+41), Miami [Ohio] (+43), USC Upstate (+45), and St. John's (+46). Stetson, at 47 over par, stands ahead of Murray State (+48), William & Mary (+50), Connecticut (+51), Towson (+52), Creighton (+55) and Western Kentucky (+70).
