Kiawah Island, S.C. - The Stetson men's golf team completed the Wendy's Kiawah Classic on Tuesday by tying for 15th out of 21 teams at 73 over par for 54 holes. Senior Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) shot two over par 74 in the final round and finished +8 overall, tying for 18th place at Turtle Point Golf Course.
Freshman Blake Snellings (Atlanta, Ga.) shot 77 and tied for 47th at +18 for Stetson's second best finish in the tournament. Senior Andrew Schiano (Orlando, Fla.) had an 80, freshman Matt Taylor (Naples, Fla.) shot 83 and senior Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) finished with an 86 to round out the Hatter contingent. Taylor tied for 79th at +25, Schiano came in +26 in a tie for 86th and Jacobsen tied for 96th at +35.
Campbell's Vaita Guillaume and George Washington's Andres Pumariega tied for first at two under par 214 for the week, sharing medalist honors by one stroke over Murray State's Patrick Newcomb and coming in 10 strokes ahead of Ryder.
In the team race, Campbell and Kennesaw State tied for the team title at 17 over par, 10 strokes clear of third place Jacksonville State. Tournament host Charleston Southern finished fourth at 36 over par with George Washington taking fifth at +47. Also beating out the Hatters this week were Minnesota (+48), Bradley (+58), USC Upstate (+58), Wisconsin (+59), IUPUI (+60), Presbyterian (+60), William & Mary (+62), Butler (+64) and St. John's (+68). Stetson tied with Connecticut at 73 over par, finishing ahead of Murray State (+76), Miami [Ohio] (+77), Creighton (+79), Towson (+81) and Western Kentucky (+96).
The Hatters wrap up the fall season this Monday-Tuesday, November 7-8 by hosting the annual Stetson/CFSC Invitational at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand. The tournament will run concurrently with the women's Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic.
