The Stetson men's tennis team (2-0) defeated Flagler College (0-1) by a score of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters improved to 2-0 on the season, building on their win over St. John's in the season-opener.
"Flagler doubles were outstanding today," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said after the match. "Both teams played extremely well. It was a great doubles point."
"I can't emphasize enough how important the momentum from the doubles is," Espie said on Saturday. "It really is important going into singles play."
The Hatters took that momentum into singles and won all six matches. Freshman Simon Julin (Stockholm, Sweden) was the first to finish in singles, defeating Stolz 6-1, 6-0. Fellow freshman Panyushkin followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Padilha.
Kapukiran, for the second match in a row, sealed the victory with his singles win. He defeated Landaluce 6-2, 6-3. Espie followed that with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Espinosa, and Antropikas was next to finish, picking up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Coulis.
Berg won the final match of the day, defeating Martinez 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. "Our team again played very confidently in singles," Pilote said. "Didrik is showing the way and our young squad is following his lead."
The men's tennis team has a lengthy break before its next match. The Hatters play host to Florida A&M on Sunday, Feb. 17. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
