The Stetson men and women's tennis teams are headed to California during spring break where each team will play a pair of matches this week.

"This is the first time since my arrival at Stetson that we are traveling during our spring break," Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said.  "This shows our players and recruits that we will travel where necessary to play a good schedule."

The men's team (4-0) is off to its best start since opening 7-0 in 2011. That mark includes a 5-2 win over then ranked #52 St. John's to begin the season. The good start can be directly related to the way the Hatters have played in singles, posting a 21-3 mark through four matches. The Hatter freshmen have posted a 15-0 record thus far.

"The men have played to expectation so far," Pilote said.  "They are improving each time they step on the court.  Our captain Didrik Berg has done a great job in making sure that our young squad stays focused and only looks forward to the next match."

The Hatters will begin their trip by taking on UC Riverside (2-8) at 3:00 p.m. (12:00 PT) on March 6. They will follow that with a match against Loyola Marymount (0-8) on March 7 at 4:30 p.m. (1:30 PT).

"Riverside has played well of late, winning two of its last four," Pilote said.  "I expect a very close match.  Loyola Marymout is a team that we have to take very seriously despite their record.  They are a strong team that can beat a top 75 team anytime they step on the court."

The women (3-3) will hope to use this trip as a chance to get back to winning ways after dropping their last two matches. Their first match is on March 7, when they take on Cal State Fullerton at 5:00 p.m. (2:00 PT). They play against Cal State Northridge the following day, March 8, at 4:30 p.m. (1:30 PT).

"I am confident that our women's team's best tennis is still ahead of them," Pilote said. "We have great leadership from our seniors, and they really want this year to be memorable."

This will be a historic trip for the team as the Hatters have never traveled to California, nor have they played a team from the state. In 2004, San Francisco was on the schedule, but the match was cancelled.

"Ever since I came to Stanford with Marcus Echtler for the NCAA singles championships, I wanted to come back with the teams.  This allows them to have that great experience."

The next home match is scheduled for Monday, March 11, when the men take on Northern Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
