Men's Tennis Excels on First Day of Bedford Cup

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Four of Stetson's men's tennis players advanced to the round of 16, as the Hatters competed in day on of competition at the Bedford Cup on Thursday.

Junior Nathan Debut, as well as sophomores Cahit Kapukiran, Simon Julin and Laurynas Antropikas, won in the first two rounds of competition to advance to third round play on Friday.

Debut defeated Amar Hromic of UCF 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the first round, and then topped Mark Hamill of North Florida 6-4, 6-1. He will take on Norbert Nemcsek of UNF in the next round on Friday at 11:00 a.m.

Kapukiran won his first round match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Florida State's Jake Albo. After defeating North Florida's Pablo Tellez 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Kapukiran advanced to play against Will neuner of Florida Atlantic on Friday.

Julin and Antropikas will actually play against each other in the third round on Sunday. The former, ranked in the tournament, had a bye to round two. He then topped Jack Murphy of Miami 6-1, 7-5. The latter, meanwhile, beat Chris Perrigan of FGCU 7-5, 6-1 and Joao Gauer of Florida State 6-3, 6-4.

Two of Stetson's three doubles pairs also advanced on Thursday at the Bedford Cup. Senior Hans Adrian Riseng teamed with Debut to top Hamill/Goldberg of UNF 8-2. They will take on Reid/Echeverry of FGCU on Friday.

Junior Chester Espie paired with Julin for doubles play. The duo defeated Bao/Perrigan of FGCU by a score of 8-5. Espie/Julin will take on Goldin/Rinaldi of Florida State on Friday.
