DeLand, Fla. - Stetson sophomore Didrik Berg (Oslo, Norway) and senior Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) have earned the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Player of the Week Awards, respectively, as announced Wednesday by the conference office. This is the first career honor for Berg and the third for Purushotham, both of whom went undefeated last weekend and led the Hatter men and women to similar unblemished marks.
Berg went 3-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles over the weekend in Bethlehem, Pa. where Stetson defeated host Lehigh as well as Monmouth, Georgetown and Lafayette in indoor matches. His singles wins were all in straight sets and two of them were in perfect 6-0, 6-0 fashion. While Berg sat out the singles portion of the Monmouth match, he and junior Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy) teamed up for doubles in all four matches and rolled to a 4-0 record. Stetson is now 5-0 on the season with all five victories coming away from DeLand.
Meanwhile, back home at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, Purushotham helped lead the Hatters to dual season-opening wins over Florida A&M (6-1) and Florida Atlantic (7-0) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, winning both her singles matches in straight sets and teaming with her Preseason A-Sun Doubles Team of the Year partner, sophomore Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) for a pair of doubles victories as well. Purushotham did not drop a set, winning 24 of 31 singles games and 16 of 19 doubles games on the weekend. A 2010 Second Team All-Atlantic Sun and A-Sun All-Tournament Team honoree, she earned two A-Sun Player of the Week awards last season as well (Feb. 18, April 7).
The Stetson men (5-0) host Georgia Southern and Saint Leo in a home-opening doubleheader this Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center while the women (2-0) play two matches Saturday and Sunday in Troy, Ala. The Hatters face host Troy on Saturday and take on Charleston Southern on Sunday.
