DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with an 18-9 record after a 7-0 win on Thursday over visiting Flagler, the 12th-ranked squad in NCAA Division II. Seniors Alex Hackett (Surrey, England) and Chris Swanteson (Vaxjo, Sweden) as well as junior Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy) played their final regular season match at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Hatters won all three doubles matches without dropping more than three games in any match to the Saints. Junior Njal Stene (Oslo, Norway) and Swanteson decisively defeated the Division II fifth-ranked duo of David Cotrone and Gino Ramirez 8-2. Other winning doubles combos for Stetson were Didrik Berg (Oslo, Norway)/Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) and Hackett/Hans Adrian Riseng (Oslo, Norway).
Flagler did not field a player at #6 singles, so the Hatters began the second portion of the match already ahead 2-0. Quick wins by Hackett and Stene, the latter over Division II national #3 Cotrone (6-2, 6-2) gave the match win to Stetson with little drama. Berg, Levanovich and Gallo completed the shutout.
Stetson now turns its attention to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships next Thursday-Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters will be seeded either fourth or fifth, pending the outcome of other matches this weekend, and will face an opponent to be determined Thursday afternoon or evening. GoHatters.com will provide live scoring updates throughout the tournament.
