DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson men's tennis team, off to a 6-1 start heading into Wednesday's home match against 37th-ranked Memphis, will make sure the Tigers are not the only ITA Top 75 squad on the courts at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center this afternoon. For the first time in two seasons, the Hatters have cracked the national rankings, coming in at #70 this week.
Stetson owns wins over this week's #69 (Florida A&M) and #75 (Penn) teams as well as A-Sun rival Kennesaw State, South Carolina State, Oral Roberts and Flagler so far this spring. The team's only setback has been on the road against #36 Arkansas.
The Hatters were last ranked in the poll for the week of March 23, 2010 - also at 70th. Stetson had been nationally ranked for at least one week in four consecutive seasons from 2007-10 with an all-time high of #53 on March 11, 2008.
"I am extremely happy for the guys; getting back into the national rankings was one of their pre-season goals and they have worked tirelessly to reach it," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. "Our new coaching structure was an important factor in the men's team being ranked. To receive the news of the men's ranking shortly after the women's team signature win against Michigan State surely must be no coincidence."
