DeLand, Fla. - Visiting 37th-ranked Memphis (10-2) handed the 70th-ranked Stetson men's tennis team (6-2) a tough 6-1 defeat at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus), named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week earlier today, earned the only point for the Hatters with a straight-set victory at the top of the singles lineup.
Levanovich, who in his last outing defeated Penn's 83rd-ranked Ivan Turudic, knocked off David O'Hare 6-3, 6-3 on Court 1 in singles action to get the Hatters on the scoreboard. O'Hare had been ranked 50th nationally in the spring preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Freshman Chester Espie (Auckland, New Zealand) nearly gave Stetson a second point, battling his Tigers opponent Leon Nasemann to a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 tiebreaker decision on Court 6.
Memphis won all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead before singles play.
"We played an outstanding team today and I know our players learned a lot from this match," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said afterwards. "Memphis plays great doubles and unfortunately some little mistakes we made cost us a lot against such a good team. We will rebound from this match as we always do and we will become a better team for having played it."
Stetson returns to action on the road at 2:00 pm Friday when it visits Georgia Southern. The Hatters will remain in Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia State in a neutral site match at 12:00 pm Saturday before returning home.
